Higgs Mechanism Physics
Where does mass come from? Higgsby fills space with the Higgs field. Electrons, quarks and W and Z bosons get their masses by coupling to it, mf = yfv/√2. Yet quarks supply only about 1% of a proton’s mass; the rest, and most of yours, is QCD binding energy. Equations
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| \(m_f\) | mass of an elementary fermion (quark or charged lepton), as rest energy | \(\mathrm{GeV/c²}\) |
| \(y_f\) | Yukawa coupling of that fermion to the Higgs field | \(\mathrm{1}\) |
| \(v\) | vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field | \(\mathrm{GeV}\) |
