Kármán Vortex Street / Strouhal Shedding Physics
Vortessa is a Pixelated Physics law character, one of our forces designs. Flow past a cylinder sheds vortices from alternate sides in a steady beat: the von Kármán vortex street, Strouhal number ≈ 0.2. This is a 3" × 3" pixel-art sticker. The physics panel below gives the equation, what each symbol means and the sources.

The physics
Flow past a cylinder sheds vortices from alternate sides, at a frequency set by the flow speed divided by the cylinder's diameter, times the Strouhal number. Von Kármán showed that the staggered vortex street is stable only for a particular spacing ratio.
Equations
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| \(f\) | shedding frequency: full left-right cycles per second | \(\mathrm{Hz}\) |
| \(\mathrm{St}\) | Strouhal number, about 0.2 to 0.21 for Re from about 300 to 200,000 (lower near onset) | \(\mathrm{1}\) |
| \(U\) | speed of the oncoming flow | \(\mathrm{m/s}\) |
| \(D\) | diameter of the cylinder | \(\mathrm{m}\) |
| \(\mathrm{Re}\) | Reynolds number | \(\mathrm{1}\) |
| \(\nu\) | kinematic viscosity of the fluid | \(\mathrm{m^2/s}\) |
| \(h\) | distance between the two rows of vortices | \(\mathrm{m}\) |
| \(a\) | spacing between vortices in one row | \(\mathrm{m}\) |
