Who they are
Meet The Vertex Smith, who forges every meeting of electron and photon. In quantum electrodynamics (QED), every electromagnetic interaction of charged particles is built from one junction: a charged particle line meeting a photon line. Its strength is the fine-structure constant, α = e²/(4πε₀ħc) ≈ 1/137.036 at low energy, and each vertex costs a factor √α ≈ 0.085, which is why QED predictions converge fast and are so precise. The Vertex Smith on a pixel-art unisex tee; equations, symbols and sources in the physics panel below."One joint, all of electromagnetism."
The Vertex Smith is a character of the Nuclear & Particle Physics arc: drawn in pixels, ruled by one piece of real physics, and never allowed to break it.
The physics
Every interaction between light and charged particles is built from one junction where a charged particle meets a photon. Its strength is the fine-structure constant, about 1/137. Because that number is small, each extra junction makes a smaller correction, so QED predictions are extremely precise.
$$ \begin{gathered} -ie\gamma^{\mu} \\ \alpha = \frac{e^{2}}{4\pi\varepsilon_0\hbar c},\qquad \alpha^{-1} = 137.035\,999\,177(21)\ \text{(CODATA 2022)} \\ \alpha^{-1}(m_Z) \approx 128 \end{gathered} $$

Crossovers
The Vertex Smith meets Recoila (Abraham–Lorentz Force). Recoila treats radiation reaction classically, and her equation has runaway solutions. The Vertex Smith handles the electron's interaction with its own field in QED, where the self-interaction is renormalised into the measured mass.
The Vertex Smith meets Splitra (Schwinger Effect). Splitra's pair production needs a field near the Schwinger value, about 1.3 × 10¹⁸ V/m. The Vertex Smith's coupling, the fine-structure constant α, is one reason the effect is exponentially suppressed below that field.
The Vertex Smith meets Counterterra (Renormalization). The Vertex Smith's diagrams give infinite loop corrections. Counterterra absorbs them into the measured mass and charge, leaving finite predictions.
