Debroglio
Matter Waves Physics
Can a baseball be a wave? Debroglio says yes, technically. Louis de Broglie proposed in 1924 that every particle with momentum p has a wavelength λ = h/p. Electrons diffract through crystals, as Davisson and Germer saw, but a baseball’s wavelength is far too tiny to notice. The physics
De Broglie proposed that every particle has a wavelength equal to Planck's constant divided by its momentum. Electrons were later shown to diffract like waves, exactly as this predicts.
Equations
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| \(\lambda\) | de Broglie wavelength | \(\mathrm{m}\) |
| \(h\) | Planck constant | \(\mathrm{J·s}\) |
| \(p\) | momentum of the particle | \(\mathrm{kg·m/s}\) |
