Puckwarden: Darcy's Law Espresso

Who they are

Puckwarden has one line, and says it often: “Pressure makes espresso. and theses.”

Puckwarden is a character of the Mechanics, Chaos & Fluids arc: drawn in pixels, ruled by one piece of real physics, and never allowed to break it.

The physics

Darcy's law: Q = −kAΔP/(μL) for flow through a porous puck.

$$ \begin{gathered} Q = -\frac{k A\, \Delta P}{\mu L} \end{gathered} $$

Symbol Meaning SI unit
$Q$ volumetric flow rate m^3/s
$k$ permeability of the puck m^2
$A$ cross-sectional area m^2
$\Delta P$ pressure difference Pa
$\mu$ dynamic viscosity Pa·s
$L$ puck thickness m

Crossovers

Puckwarden meets Percolia (Percolation Threshold). Puckwarden's espresso flows through a porous puck by Darcy's law. Percolia decides whether such a medium has connected pores at all: below the percolation threshold, no spanning path exists and the flow stops.

Puckwarden meets Summitbrew (Boiling Point at Altitude). Summitbrew's water boils cooler at altitude. Puckwarden doesn't wait for boiling: she pushes water at about 9 bar through the puck, and Darcy's law says the flow scales with the pressure drop divided by viscosity and bed length.
