Theta Warden: Strong CP Problem

Nuclear & Particle Physics arc, page 180 of 193. Back to The Pixelated Physics Universe

Who they are

Theta Warden holds a balance that nature never promised to keep level. The strong force is allowed a term, set by an angle θ̄, that would break CP symmetry and give the neutron an electric dipole moment. Experiments find none: |d_n| < 1.8×10⁻²⁶ e·cm (PSI, 2020), so |θ̄| ≲ 10⁻¹⁰. Why it is so small is an open question; the axion is one proposed answer, not yet seen. Theta Warden on a pixel-art unisex tee; equations, symbols and sources in the panel below.

Theta Warden is a character of the Nuclear & Particle Physics arc: drawn in pixels, ruled by one piece of real physics, and never allowed to break it.

The physics

The strong force is allowed to treat matter and its mirror image differently, through an angle θ̄. If it did, the neutron would have an electric dipole moment. Measurements find none, which forces θ̄ below about one ten-billionth, and nobody knows why.

$$ \begin{gathered} \mathcal{L}_\theta = \bar\theta\,\frac{g_s^{2}}{32\pi^{2}}\,G^{a}_{\mu\nu}\tilde G^{a\,\mu\nu} \\ \bar\theta = \theta - \arg\det M_q \\ d_n \sim 10^{-16}\,\bar\theta\ e\,\text{cm} \end{gathered} $$

Symbol Meaning SI unit
$\mathcal{L}_\theta$ CP-violating term in the QCD Lagrangian density (natural units) GeV⁴
$\bar\theta$ effective strong CP angle (physical, basis-independent combination; sign convention varies) rad
$\theta$ bare QCD vacuum angle rad
$g_s$ strong coupling constant 1
$G^{a}_{\mu\nu}$ gluon field strength tensor, colour index a = 1…8 GeV²
$\tilde G^{a\,\mu\nu}$ dual field strength, ½ε^{μνρσ}G^a_{ρσ} GeV²
$M_q$ quark mass matrix GeV
$d_n$ neutron electric dipole moment (quoted in e·cm; SI: C·m) C·m
$e$ elementary charge C

Status: part of this topic is unsolved, unconfirmed or debated. The text above says which part; treat it as an open question, not settled fact.

Crossovers

Theta Warden meets Sakhara (Baryon Asymmetry). Theta Warden guards the strong force's CP-violating angle, which experiments find to be tiny. Sakhara needs CP violation to explain why matter won. One problem has too little, the other needs more, and both are unsolved.

Theta Warden meets Glueba (Yang–Mills and the Mass Gap). Theta Warden's angle is a term in the theory of the strong force. Glueba's mass gap is a property of the same gauge theory. Both are unsolved questions about QCD.
