Vortia & Antivortia: BKT Transition

Thermodynamics & Statistical Physics arc, page 68 of 193. Back to The Pixelated Physics Universe

Who they are

Vortia and Antivortia spin opposite ways, bound together in the cold, until the heat sets them free.

Vortia & Antivortia is a character of the Thermodynamics & Statistical Physics arc: drawn in pixels, ruled by one piece of real physics, and never allowed to break it.

The physics

In a flat 2D world, spins can't line up across all space, yet a phase transition still happens: vortex–antivortex pairs unbind. A lone vortex costs energy that grows with the log of the system size, but its entropy grows the same way. When temperature makes the free energy E − TS change sign, free vortices proliferate. At the transition, the superfluid stiffness jumps by a universal amount. Berezinskii (1971) and Kosterlitz and Thouless (1973) found it; Bishop and Reppy saw the jump in helium films in 1978. Kosterlitz and Thouless shared the 2016 Nobel Prize.

$$ \begin{gathered} E = \pi J \ln\frac{R}{a}, \qquad S = 2 k_B \ln\frac{R}{a} \\ k_B T \approx \frac{\pi J}{2} \quad (\text{bare estimate}) \\ \frac{\hbar^{2}\rho_s}{m^{2} k_B T_{BKT}} = \frac{2}{\pi} \end{gathered} $$

Symbol Meaning SI unit
$E$ energy of one isolated vortex J
$J$ spin stiffness (coupling energy) of the 2D XY model J
$R$ system size m
$a$ vortex core size / lattice spacing m
$S$ entropy of one free vortex J/K
$k_B$ Boltzmann constant, 1.380 649 × 10⁻²³ J/K (exact) J/K
$T$ temperature K
$T_{BKT}$ transition temperature K
$\hbar$ reduced Planck constant J·s
$\rho_s$ areal superfluid mass density just below T_BKT kg/m²
$m$ mass of one helium-4 atom kg

Honest caveat: The simple estimate k_B T = πJ/2 is a bare value; the renormalised transition temperature is lower. 2D order isn't absent, it is quasi-long-range.

Crossovers

Vortia & Antivortia meets Backrowena (Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking). Backrowena says symmetric laws can have an asymmetric ground state. Vortia and Antivortia say that in two dimensions, a continuous symmetry cannot be broken at any non-zero temperature, yet a BKT transition still happens, through bound vortex pairs coming unbound.

Vortia & Antivortia meets Superfluid (Quantum Fluid at Near Absolute Zero). Vortia and Antivortia's transition governs thin helium films, where vortex pairs unbind and superflow is lost. Superfluid's bulk helium II shows the same quantised vortices in three dimensions.
