Quenchard, the Superconducting Duke Mug
A superconducting magnet quenches when a local spot turns normal; Joule heating spreads the normal zone and the stored energy dumps. NbTi: Tc ≈ 9.2 K.
The joke: 'Goes normal' is the insider phrase for losing superconductivity; one hot spot is enough. The slogan on the mug reads ONE WARM SPOT. EVERYTHING GOES NORMAL.
