Photonix
Photoelectric Effect Physics
Why can dim ultraviolet light free electrons when bright red light cannot? Photonix knows. Light arrives in quanta of energy hf. Each photon frees one electron with at most Kmax = hf − φ, so frequency sets the energy and brightness only sets the number. Einstein explained it in 1905. The physics
Light delivers energy in photons of hf. An electron can only escape a metal if one photon gives it more than the work function, and the leftover becomes its kinetic energy. Brighter light means more electrons, not faster ones.
Equations
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| \(K_{\max}\) | maximum kinetic energy of an ejected electron | \(\mathrm{J}\) |
| \(h\) | Planck constant | \(\mathrm{J·s}\) |
| \(f\) | frequency of the light | \(\mathrm{Hz}\) |
| \(\phi\) | work function: minimum energy to free an electron from the metal | \(\mathrm{J}\) |
