Marie Curie Sticker
She Literally Glowed Up | Physics
The glow was radium’s. Finding it took years of patient chemistry. With Pierre, Marie Curie discovered polonium and radium in 1898, and she won Nobel Prizes in physics (1903) and chemistry (1911). A pixel-art portrait on a 3" × 3" sticker; the physics panel below has the equation, every symbol and the sources.

The physics
Each radioactive nucleus has a fixed chance per second of decaying, so the number left falls exponentially. The half-life is ln 2 divided by that decay constant, and the activity is the decay constant times the number of nuclei.
Equations
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| \(N\) | number of undecayed nuclei | \(\mathrm{1}\) |
| \(\lambda\) | decay constant | \(\mathrm{s⁻¹}\) |
| \(t_{1/2}\) | half-life | \(\mathrm{s}\) |
| \(A\) | activity (1 Bq = 1 decay per second) | \(\mathrm{Bq}\) |
