Mach Cone Hoodie
IT ARRIVES BEFORE ITS NOISE | Pixelated Physics
Size guide S–5XL · inches
What happens when something outruns its own sound? The Mach Cone stands for the shock cone around anything supersonic. Each sound wave spreads as a sphere, but the source keeps moving past them, so the wavefronts pile up on one cone whose half-angle satisfies sin µ = 1/M, exactly 30° at Mach 2. This is a black pixel-art hoodie from Pixelated Physics.

The physics
An object moving faster than sound outruns its own sound waves, and they pile up into a cone. The cone's half-angle satisfies sin μ = 1/M, so the faster the object, the narrower the cone; at Mach 2 it is 30 degrees.
Equations
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| \(\mu\) | Mach angle, half-angle of the cone | \(\mathrm{rad}\) |
| \(c\) | speed of sound in the medium | \(\mathrm{m/s}\) |
| \(v\) | speed of the source | \(\mathrm{m/s}\) |
| \(M\) | Mach number, v/c (here 2) | \(\mathrm{1}\) |
| \(r_n\) | radius at time t of the wavefront sent at time t_n | \(\mathrm{m}\) |
| \(x_n\) | position of the source when it sent that wavefront | \(\mathrm{m}\) |
