Hadron Brawler: Strong Nuclear Force / Quantum Chromodynamics

Nuclear & Particle Physics arc, page 170 of 193. Back to The Pixelated Physics Universe

Who they are

Try to pull a quark loose and the universe refuses. Quantum chromodynamics: gluons bind quarks so tightly they are never seen alone, only inside hadrons like protons. Hadron Brawler wears it in pixel art on a unisex tee.

Hadron Brawler is a character of the Nuclear & Particle Physics arc: drawn in pixels, ruled by one piece of real physics, and never allowed to break it.

The physics

The Cornell potential describes the force between a heavy quark and antiquark: Coulomb-like at short range, with an extra term that grows steadily with distance. That linear term, like a stretched string, is why quarks can never be pulled out of a hadron alone.

$$ \begin{gathered} V(r) = -\frac{4}{3}\frac{\alpha_s \hbar c}{r} + \sigma r \end{gathered} $$

Symbol Meaning SI unit
$V(r)$ static quark–antiquark potential (Cornell form) J
$\alpha_s$ strong coupling 1
$\hbar c$ reduced Planck constant × c J·m
$r$ quark separation m
$\sigma$ string tension (quoted in GeV/fm) J/m

Crossovers

Hadron Brawler meets Quarkbinders (Quantum Chromodynamics / Strong Nuclear Force). Quarkbinders gives quarks their three colours. Hadron Brawler shows the result: the strong force grows with distance, so coloured quarks are only ever found inside colour-neutral hadrons.

Hadron Brawler meets Glueba (Yang–Mills and the Mass Gap). Hadron Brawler's confinement is observed. Glueba asks for proof that pure Yang–Mills theory has a mass gap, which is unsolved.

Hadron Brawler meets Corekeeper (Strong Nuclear Force / Nuclear Binding). Corekeeper's nuclear binding is a residual of Hadron Brawler's strong force: colour-neutral nucleons still attract at femtometre range, enough to beat proton repulsion.
