Enrayne
The N-Ray Delusion Pixel
Size guide S–5XL · inches
Enrayne, a knight in violet-grey armour whose visor shows only two faint eyes, leans toward an empty prism cradle and still sees rays.
The Physics
In 1903 René Blondlot at Nancy announced “N-rays”, a new radiation he said made a faint spark brighter and could be dispersed by an aluminium prism into a spectrum. Dozens of papers followed. In 1904 the American physicist R. W. Wood visited and, in the darkened lab, secretly removed the prism. The observers went on reading the same spectrum. His letter in Nature 70, 530 (29 September 1904) ended the field. N-rays do not exist; what was measured was the observers’ expectation.
Real signal test: S / σobs with the observer blind to the condition
- S: change in the measured quantity when the claimed cause is present versus absent
- σobs: spread of readings from observer judgement alone, including bias, when the observer does not know which condition is set
Judging the brightness of a faint spark by eye sits near the threshold of vision, where expectation dominates. Wood’s prism swap was in effect a blind control: with the cause removed, S should vanish, and it did not. Sources: R. W. Wood, “The n-Rays”, Nature 70, 530 (1904), doi:10.1038/070530a0; APS News, “This Month in Physics History”, Aug 2007.
Honest caveat: Wood made other tests too; this design keeps to the prism story. Blondlot was a respected physicist, and the episode is a warning about method, not a joke about him.
In character
I saw them. I swear I saw them, even after the cradle went empty. That is the lesson I carry: the eye finds what the heart expects.
