Why does coffee cool but never reheat itself? Disordra counts the ways. Boltzmann’s S = kB ln Ω links entropy to the number of microscopic arrangements behind what we see. Disordered states vastly outnumber ordered ones, so an isolated system’s total entropy almost never decreases. Pixel-art black ceramic mug in 11 or 15 oz; equation, symbols and sources in the physics panel below.

The physics

Entropy counts how many microscopic arrangements match what we see, on a logarithmic scale. In an isolated system it never decreases, because disordered arrangements vastly outnumber ordered ones.

Disordra does not make a mess. She counts.

Ludwig Boltzmann's idea, the first line on this mug, is that entropy measures how many microscopic arrangements, Ω, look the same from outside. A cup of coffee at one temperature can have its molecules arranged in an astronomically large number of ways. A cup with all the fast molecules on one side has far fewer. The formula is engraved, as S = k log W, on Boltzmann's tombstone in Vienna.

Toss 100 coins. There is exactly one way to get all heads, and about 10²⁹ ways to get fifty heads and fifty tails. Shake the box and you will see something near half and half, not because all heads is forbidden, but because it is outnumbered.

That is the second line. For an isolated system, total entropy does not go down, because the system wanders into the overwhelmingly more numerous arrangements and practically never wanders back. Coffee cools into the room; the room never spontaneously heats the coffee. Rudolf Clausius stated the law in 1865 from heat and temperature; Boltzmann showed why it holds, statistically.

IT ONLY GOES ONE WAY. is true of the total for an isolated system, and true with overwhelming odds rather than absolute certainty. Locally, entropy can fall: a fridge cools its inside and a living cell builds order, while each pays by raising entropy elsewhere by more.

Disordra never forbids anything. She just knows which way the numbers lean.
