Dozens of papers followed. In 1904 the American physicist R. W. Wood visited and, in the darkened lab, secretly removed the prism. The observers went on reading the same spectrum. His letter in \u003cem\u003eNature\u003c\/em\u003e 70, 530 (29 September 1904) ended the field.
